Import of Indian movies should be restricted: Pak Senate Committee

The Chairman of the Senate Standing Committee on Culture, Senator Zafar Iqbal Chaudhry has said that the Government should take all stakeholders into confidence before taking a final decision on the import and exhibition of Indian films in Pakistan. According to The News, the committee suggested that the import of movies should be done without harming Pakistans religious and cultural norms and values. The committee said that Pakistani producers must try to win their share of the large Indian market, as it was fertile enough to accommodate good Pakistani Urdu and Punjabi movies. The committee expressed dismay over cable operators openly telecasting Indian movies despite a complete ban on such movies since 1965. (ANI)

SCS reserves recommendations on Shoaib’s ban

Senate Committee for Sports (SCS) Monday reserved its recommendations after holding a discussion over imposition of five-year ban on Pakistan cricket star Shoaib Akhtar. A special meeting of Senate Committee for Sports was held here at Parliament House under the chairmanship of Senator Zafar Iqbal Chaudhry. Senator Zafar Iqbal said the Senate Committee will announce its ruling after the decision of the Appellate Committee. Chairman Disciplinary Committee of Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), Gen. Munir Hafeez presented a charge sheet regarding Shoaib Akhtar’s acts of indiscipline. He said Shoaib Akhtar violated the discipline frequently during the past 11 years and was placed under two-year probation starting from October 2007. Gen. Munir said the board of governors also recommended the imposition of ban on Shoaib. Chairman PCB, Nasim Ashraf said he would resign from his post but not compromise on the discipline. He said Shoaib was punished under the rules and regulations and an independent appellate tribunal will hear his appeal. “I will honour whatever decision the appellate committee makes,” he said.

President, PM urged to intervene in Asif case

The Senate committee for sports has appealed to President Pervez Musharraf and Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani to intervene for getting fast bowler Mohammad Asif released, who is under-arrest in Dubai. The meeting of the Senate committee for sports was held under senator Zafar Iqbal Chaudhry here on Wednesday at the Parliament House. The committee expressed concern on the issue of not getting Mohammad Asif released who is under-arrest in Dubai for many weeks and said that the country is getting a bad name due to this incident. Senator Anwar Baig demanded a life ban on Asif whereas senator Haroon Khan asked for his immediate release. Chairman Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Dr. Nasim Ashraf said that the board would itself investigate the case of Mohammad Asif and if his crime is proved he would be punished according to law. He told that the PCB is making efforts for getting Asif freed through the Pakistan embassy in Dubai. Expressing satisfaction on monetary details of the PCB, the committee decided to review on quarterly basis the PCB accounts and the performance of the national cricket team.
